HX PCB
Choosing the right surface finish is one of the most important decisions in PCB manufacturing. The finish protects exposed copper from oxidation and directly affects solderability, assembly yield and total cost. The three most common options are HASL, ENIG and OSP.
HASL (Hot Air Solder Leveling)
HASL is the most economical finish. The board is dipped in molten solder and leveled with hot air. Lead-free HASL offers excellent solderability and a long shelf life, making it ideal for simple, cost-sensitive designs. Its main drawbacks are uneven surfaces, which can affect fine-pitch assembly, and the thermal stress of the dipping process.
ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold)
ENIG provides a flat, planar surface with excellent oxidation resistance, making it the best choice for fine-pitch components, BGA packages and HDI boards. It also supports wire bonding and aluminum bonding. ENIG costs more than HASL and requires careful process control to avoid black pad issues, so it should be ordered from a qualified manufacturer.
OSP (Organic Solderability Preservative)
OSP applies a thin organic film over the copper. It is flat, low cost and lead free, and it works well for solder paste assembly. However, its shelf life is short and it is less suitable for multiple reflow cycles or for boards with long storage requirements.
Quick Selection Guide
- Cost-sensitive, simple design: choose lead-free HASL
- Fine pitch, BGA, HDI or wire bonding: choose ENIG
- Single reflow, flat and low cost: choose OSP
